Evaluation Questions

All four evaluation questions

  • In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  • How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
  • What have you learned from your audience feedback?
  • How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Analysis - Magazine Advert

Visual Digi-Pak

Here I have attached a few images that show how my Digi-pak will fold and look as if it were real. The first images I placed the photographs into a spare CD frame. The first images is a small representation made out of paper. I hope these give you a visual aid.

Final Digi-pak

Completed Digi-Pak:

Spine
Front
Inside sleeve
Back

Back Of Digipak

This is my original idea for the back of my Digi-pak, I made sure to include a track list, record label, a barcode and the rights and regulations. However I still need to create a spine. I have noticed on many other Digi-pak's they usually label and overcomplicate things, thats why I have decided to be very minimalistic and simple.

Digipak Firm Ideas

Digipak:
I have taken numerous screenshots from some spare footage from our music video, my idea is to edit these images slightly and place them on the back of my Digi-pak. The whole reason for this is because I want to have a front and back perspective of the characters. How the last image I want to insert as a sleeve into the CD creating and allusion by opening the CD pack you are literally opening up the characters giving you the insight of their emotions (which are the tracks on the CD)

Ideas for the back:

Ideas for the inside sleeve:

So this is where the CD would we placed (over the right hand side) but this is to portray that you are following other peoples journeys and emotions throughout the album.

What Is A Digi-pak?

What is a Digipak?

Digipak-style packaging is often used for CD singles or special editions of CD albums Digipaks typically consist of a gatefold (book-style) paperboard or card stock outer binding, with one or more plastic trays capable of holding a CD or DVD attached to the inside the generic "digipack" came to be used to describe all soft CD packaging. Digipaks were first created by MeadWestvaco, and their product, called Digi-Pak, is trademarked. However, as the format became more popular and began to be used by more manufacturers. Now in current times digipaks are very common and very popular.

How does a digipak benefit the artist?

The front of the digipak with have some aspect of what the artist presents and what their pre dominate genre is. The digipak will most likely embody and theme and a message about the artist image. Thislinks to emphasizing the artist brand image which increases thepopularity of the artist. The digipak also exemplifies the artistic andcreative approach the artist is taking throughout the music. For example if there’s some futuristic idealism conveyed in the lyrics or the visuals inthe music video then the front cover wouldn’t be very contemporarybut more obscure and abstract. All aspects of the digipak, brand image and music video are all interwoven together. Digipaks benefit the artist and their music as its promotional aspect of the music industry which helps bring awareness to the artist thus selling the artist and encouraging consumers to buy and listen to their music. You could argue that buying a digipak establishes your loyalty to your artist

Orignal Music Video

Jorja Smiths original music video for Teenage Fantasy tells a similar story to our narrative, As a viewer I would interpret it as we are forced into a society where we feel as if we have to fit in and act a certain way in order to be accepted. However Jorja's character in this music video breaks the chains of this social control. Similarly to our narrative at the beginning of this video we are introduced to a female and another character (man or woman) and we can clearly see that she is not interested in the embrace (implying a relationship) however when she is with Jorja Smiths character she seems to feel a lot more comfortable and relaxed.

Lip-Syncing

As we wanted our product to be a strictly narrative music video we decided to include one line of dialogue this is where Lucy's character say's "We all want a teenage fantasy want it when we can't have it but when we got it we don't seem to want it" during this Sam's character is unaware that Lucy is doing this, this subconsciously portrays how Sam is unaware of Lucy's feelings and is 'kept in the dark' but is still trying with the relationship.

Post-Production Inspiration

Published on April 5th 2018 - After our deadline date, I have taken huge inspiration from this music video, the editing and intertextuality is so fluent and polished throughout the whole music video, giving amazing visuals. This is defiantly something I would of liked to incorporate into my music video, even though it is a different genre to Jorja Smiths 'Teenage Fantasy' of 'neo-soul' I feel like these visuals would fit nicely into our music video, helping to distinguish yet mould both narratives together.

Audience Feedback

After collecting our audience feedback we were very pleased to find that many people understood our narrative which is something that we were worried about throughout. This can be seen when Katie simply explains our narrative. However now that we have so much positive audience feedback it has definitely put our minds at ease.  We appreciated how people understood the little details such as when phoebe say's "when she's at the coffee shop and it says' upset when you didn't text back' she's on her phone so you can clearing see how it is related to the lyrics" this is something we tried to do throughout and we are glad that many people picked up on this editing technique. Also using the two narratives alongside each other Sophie replies "They compliment each other well" again with this it shows how taking risks can work out in your favour, as we were quite anxious that people would not like or understand our narrative. We appreciate as well when Katie and Rachel say "How it is natural, like everyday life "Yeah, you wouldn't want it to be too polished". Overall we found that audience feedback really put our minds at ease as a group, and answered a lot of our concerns, we found this very helpful.

How To Use The Fyuse App

Following the complications that we ran into whilst exporting our Fuse videos we can up with a solution. We found that due to using an iPhone to record these short videos, exporting them and opening them on a mac, the quality of the video decreased drastically. However we found if we simply did a screen recording on the iPhone and then send the screen recording to the mac and edit the video, the quality is the same as it is on the iPhone, giving our video an overall 'polished' and professional look. I have attached some videos below on how to use the 'Fyuse' app itself and how we managed to screen record the videos.

Single Person Shoot

To make the storyline clear we had to be sure to show a direct contrast between the 'couple' and 'the person that wants to be in love otherwise we feel like people would of been very confused about our storyline. As a group we decided to do similar activities and then contrast them. For example when the 'couple' are ordering food we placed the single character in a coffee shop this seeming that things are a lot more fun when you are not alone. However this is not the case, you will see this when the storyline unravels. We have done this all throughout our music video to make the narrative more clear and to show a greater contrast. For example we have placed the characters into similar situations for example sitting on a train, shopping, eating ect..

The Contrast

In order to completely understand the narrative a clear contrast between Sam and Lucy's character and my character (the single person) To do this we filmed similar scenarios with the different characters. For example if Sam and Lucy were in a restaurant, my character would do something similar (e:g sit in a cafe). We wanted to do this as well because it was a way of directly contrasting everyones emotions and you can tell Lucy is not as happy as she should be.

As pictured above you can see how we place the characters in similar situations, Sitting on the train, eating, walking ect.

Colour/Saturation

As a group we intended to make our music video highly contrasted throughout. However using the Fuse app we found that once exported the quality of the video decreased drastically and would create an ugly glitch effect which is what we did not want. So at first we messed around with the colour and saturation of the video in order to get it to the quality that we wanted. We also tried to slow down or speed up the video to get a smooth transition but this sadly did not work.

After a bit of research we figured out how to make it work which I will explain in my next blog post.
